What is Durometer

Durometer is a measuring instrument specifically designed for testing and measuring the hardness of various materials. It provides a standardized way of quantifying a material’s resistance to permanent penetration under static or dynamic load. Durometers are commonly used to assess the hardness of metals, plastics, rubbers, and elastomers.

The hardness of a material is defined as its ability to resist deformation caused by mechanical indentation or abrasion. Durometers utilize specific scales, such as the shore 00, shore A, and shore D scales, to provide numerical values that indicate the material’s hardness. These scales allow for comparisons between different materials tested using the same durometer scale.

To measure durometer hardness, an engineer places the needle of the durometer tester against the material and applies pressure. The needle penetrates the material until it can no longer go further, and the corresponding durometer hardness is indicated on the appropriate scale. It is important to note that durometer numbers are dimensionless measurements and do not represent units of measurement. Instead, they indicate the relative hardness of a material compared to others on the same durometer scale.
