What is Flying Probe

Flying probe is a testing method that utilizes probes to perform electrical tests on PCBs. Unlike the traditional “bed of nails” fixture test, the flying probe test does not require a physical fixture. Instead, a flying probe tester is used, equipped with headers that can move at high speed along the X-Y axis.

During the flying probe test, the unit under test (UUT) is transported to the internal tester, where the probes make contact with the test pads and vias on the PCB. This contact allows the flying probe tester to identify any defects, such as shorts, opens, and component values. The probes are connected to drivers and sensors through a multiplexing system, enabling the testing of various components on the UUT.

To ensure accuracy, the flying probe tester has a positioning accuracy and repeatability ranging between 5μm and 15μm. This level of precision allows for an accurate assessment of the fabrication situation of the UUT. Additionally, the flying probe tester is equipped with a camera, which aids in identifying missing components and inspecting component polarity.
