What is Edge Spacing

Edge spacing is the minimum distance or clearance required between components on a printed circuit board and the board edge. It ensures the integrity and reliability of the PCB during manufacturing processes, particularly depanelization.

During the depanelization process, which involves separating individual PCBs from a larger panel, components located near the board edge may be subjected to stress that could potentially compromise the integrity of their solder joints. A certain distance or spacing is maintained between the components and the board edge to prevent this.

The specified edge spacing refers to component pads and bodies for parts installed using automated assembly processes. Manually assembled parts may be placed closer to the board edge, but it is still recommended to maintain a minimum distance of 10 mil to allow for a solder mask gap and prevent encroachment of the pads. Copper traces can also be run closer to the board edge, but caution should be exercised to avoid any potential issues.
