What is E-pad

An E-pad, short for “exposed pad,” is a large central pad found on a component, typically connected to a ground plane on the PCB. The primary purpose of the E-pad is to facilitate PCB heatsinking, allowing for the efficient dissipation of heat generated by the component.

When it comes to soldering the E-pad, it is recommended to use solder paste rather than relying on hand-soldering techniques. This is due to the size and thermal requirements of the pad. By utilizing solder paste, a more reliable and effective connection can be established between the E-pad and the large copper plane on the PCB, ensuring optimal heat transfer.
