What is DNI

DNI stands for “Do Not Install” or “Do Not Populate.” It is a term used to indicate components or parts that will not be purchased by the Parts Procurement team and will not be populated on the board during the assembly process. These components are marked as DNI on the Bill of Materials (BoM) and are typically kept at the customer’s local facilities to be populated onto the board at a later stage.

The purpose of marking components as DNI is to inform the assembly team that these specific parts should not be included in the assembly process. This could be due to various reasons, such as the component being optional for certain applications, not required for the current design, or intended for future modifications or upgrades. By marking them as DNI, it ensures that these components are not mistakenly included in the assembly, saving time and resources.

DNI parts may also be referred to as DNP (Do Not Place) or DNE (Do Not Equip). These terms essentially convey the same meaning, indicating that these components should not be populated on the board during the assembly process.
