What is Hermetic

Hermetic is a sealing technology to create airtight and watertight enclosures for circuit boards. It involves the use of a hermetic sealing epoxy to ensure a reliable and durable seal, protecting the enclosed components from contamination due to outgassing.

Hermetic sealing allows increased conductor density. Creating a sealed enclosure directly on the circuit board allows more conductors to be accommodated within the same-size housing. This is particularly beneficial for high-volume applications with space constraints or weight requirements.

Hermetically sealed circuit boards also offer the advantage of smaller, lighter, and less expensive end products. By reducing the size of the housing for the same conductor count, the overall size and weight of the final product can be minimized. This is especially useful in applications where size and weight are critical factors.

Hermetic sealing takes advantage of the low-cost circuit board manufacturing process. Hermetic sealing reduces the complexity and cost of the circuit board assembly by eliminating the need for individual wire seals and the associated labor required for wire-to-circuit connections.

Questions fréquemment posées

What Is a Hermetic Cable

A hermetic cable, also known as a hermetic wire feedthrough, is an electrical connector designed specifically to transmit electrical signals or power through a hermetic seal.

What Is Hermetic Packaging

“Hermetic” is a term that is frequently misinterpreted. Although it is often used interchangeably with phrases like “airtight,” the correct definition pertains to a seal that is impermeable to gases and effectively prevents both moisture and harmful gases from infiltrating a sealed electronic package.

What Is a Hermetically Sealed Enclosure

A hermetically sealed enclosure, also known as hermetic packaging, involves encapsulating a device or system in a protected package to prevent the exchange of the internal and external environments.

What Is the Use of Hermetic Connector

Hermetic connectors serve the purpose of ensuring that no air, gases, or liquids can enter the vacuum-sealed connector, even in highly challenging conditions. These connectors are specifically designed to withstand extreme environments and should exhibit no signs of gas or fluid leakage during testing.

What Material Is Hermetic Connector

Hermetic connectors can be made of various materials, such as brass, copper, or nickel iron pin contacts, in addition to incorporating fiber optic cables.

What Is the Difference Between Hermetic and Non Hermetic

Hermetic packaging is a technique used to enhance packaging by reducing weight, minimizing space requirements, improving thermal transfer, and more. On the other hand, non-hermetic packaging refers to packaging materials that have much higher gas and moisture permeability than hermetic packages.

Why Is Hermetic Packaging Important

By its design, a hermetic seal ensures that no gases or liquids can enter the package cavity where the die is located. This characteristic allows hermetic packages to withstand higher temperatures compared to plastic packages.
