What is Gold Plated

Gold plated is the process of depositing a layer of gold onto the surface of a circuit board to enhance conductivity and provide other benefits. This plating technique involves the use of electrochemical plating, where a gold plating solution containing gold ions is applied to a positively charged surface, known as the cathode. The gold ions chemically bond with the surface, resulting in a thin layer of gold, typically less than 15 millionths of an inch thick.

Gold plating is commonly used in PCB production due to its excellent conductivity and adhesion properties. It improves the electrical connections on the board, making it suitable for applications that require high-quality and reliable electrical performance. Additionally, gold is highly resistant to corrosion, providing protection against tarnishing and oxidation, which is particularly advantageous in environments where the PCB may be exposed to moisture or other corrosive substances.

Furthermore, gold plating enhances the aesthetics of the circuit board with its shiny and reflective appearance, making it visually appealing and suitable for applications where the board may be visible or require a premium look.
