What is Gerber File

A Gerber file is an open ASCII vector format that stores essential information about the design of a printed circuit board. It serves as a standardized file format used by manufacturers for PCB fabrication. The Gerber file contains detailed data about the various elements and features of the PCB, including copper layers, drill templates, solder mask, legend, and other relevant information.

Developed by Gerber Systems Corp, the Gerber file format has become widely adopted in the industry. It allows for the representation of circuit board objects, such as copper traces, vias, pads, solder mask, and silkscreen images, through the use of flash or draw codes and vector coordinates.

Manufacturers rely on Gerber files to accurately translate the design specifications into the physical properties of the PCB during the fabrication process. These files are typically generated by PCB design software and adhere to the RS-274X Gerber format, which has replaced the outdated RS-274-D standard.
