What is Dry Film Soldermask

Dry film soldermask is a protective coating applied to the top surface of a circuit board. It is specifically designed to prevent solder from flowing onto unintended areas during the soldering process, such as the pads and vias. Unlike liquid solder masks, dry film soldermask is applied as a dry film using a vacuum substrate process.

Dry film soldermask is known for its mess-free application and ease of handling. It cures quickly, providing a professional-looking result. This makes it particularly useful when soldering surface mount components (SMD) on circuit boards.

In terms of compatibility, dry film soldermask works well with various soldering methods and fluxes. It has wide processing parameters, allowing for flexibility in different manufacturing environments. It also exhibits exceptional mechanical, physical, chemical, and electrical resistance properties, ensuring the durability and protection of the PCB.

Dry film soldermask is typically available as a high gloss, transparent film in forest green color. It comes in different thicknesses, usually 75 microns (3 mils) and 100 microns (4 mils), and is supplied in various widths and roll lengths. The film consists of a photopolymer sandwiched between a polyester support sheet and a polyethylene release sheet.
