What is Dielectric Strength

Dielectric strength is the maximum electric field that a dielectric material can withstand without experiencing electrical breakdown or failure. It determines the insulation capability of the dielectric material and its ability to prevent electrical leakage or short circuits.

To determine the dielectric strength of a material, it is subjected to high-voltage pulses at standard AC power frequencies. The dielectric strength is typically expressed in units of volts per unit thickness, such as volts per millimeter or volts per mil. Typical values for dielectric strength in PCB dielectrics range from 800 volts per mil to 1500 volts per mil.
