What is Clamshell Fixture

A clamshell fixture is a test fixture used for probing both sides of a PCB during in-circuit testing. This fixture is designed with a clamshell-like structure, featuring hinged lids that can be opened and closed to securely hold the PCB in place. The clamshell fixture provides simultaneous access to test points on both the top and bottom sides of the PCB, allowing for efficient and comprehensive testing.

Clamshell fixtures are custom-made and can be constructed using durable materials such as delrin, which is known for its wear resistance and durability. The construction of these fixtures often involves the use of a lathe to shape the delrin material. The custom nature of clamshell fixtures enables them to be tailored to the specific requirements of the PCB being tested, ensuring a precise fit and optimal testing conditions.

These fixtures may incorporate various features to enhance their functionality. For example, they can be equipped with vacuum, pneumatics, or mechanically actuated Z motion lids to provide a stable platform for testing. This ensures that the PCB remains securely held in place during the testing process.
